Omni is a genuinely different perp DEX: no maker or taker fees and 550+ markets from one USDC account on Arbitrum, because a single in-house market maker quotes every trade. You pay through the spread instead, you need an access code to join, and US, Canadian and Taiwanese users are not allowed.

What we like

  • No maker or taker fees on any market
  • One cross-margined account for crypto and traditional assets
  • Gasless deposits and withdrawals, no ETH needed
  • Audited by Zellic and Spearbit

Watch out for

  • One market maker (OLP) is the counterparty to every trade
  • Costs hide in the spread, so compare quotes on big orders
  • Forced liquidations close at a 0.5% worse price
  • Invite-only for now and closed to US and Canadian users

What is Variational Omni?

Variational Omni is a perpetual futures exchange built on the Variational Protocol and deployed on Arbitrum. You connect an EVM wallet, deposit USDC and trade crypto, stocks, commodities, FX and pre-IPO markets from a single cross-margined account, with leverage from 1x to 50x.

The big difference from Hyperliquid, Lighter or Aster is that Omni has no order book. Prices come through request-for-quote (RFQ): a market maker called the Omni Liquidity Provider (OLP) quotes a buy and sell price for your size, and you trade against it. OLP is the counterparty to every trade on Omni. It sources liquidity from centralized exchanges, DEXs and traditional-market dealers, then hedges its own exposure on those venues.

That design is why Omni can list hundreds of markets quickly: a new market only needs a reliable price feed, a quoting strategy and a way to hedge.

How can Omni charge zero fees?

Omni charges no maker or taker fees. Its documentation says the revenue comes from the spread instead: OLP keeps the market-making profit that external market makers would normally earn. The protocol then takes a cut of that spread revenue. Today 20% of the spread paid goes to the Variational protocol treasury, a share the team says is still being tested and may change.

So "zero fees" does not mean free. Your real cost is the gap between the price you get and the fair price. The order form shows the spread for your exact size before you trade, which makes it easy to check.

What trading on Omni really costs

FundingPaid between longs and shorts; capped at 2% per hourFunding rates page
Liquidation penaltyPosition closed at bid − 0.5% (longs) or ask + 0.5% (shorts)Liquidation page

Funding works like on other perp venues: a positive rate means longs pay shorts. The calculation window copies Bybit for markets listed there, then Binance, otherwise one hour. For BTC that means an 8-hour window, so the hourly rate shows 0 for seven hours and settles in the eighth.

Market orders can also slip. Omni lets you set a slippage limit and rejects a market order that would fill beyond it. Smaller orders and limit orders reduce the problem.

Leverage, margin and liquidation

Leverage is simply 1 divided by the initial margin. 20x means a 5% initial margin, and the maintenance margin is usually half of that. You can choose cross margin (one USDC balance backs every position) or isolated margin on some markets.

Liquidation starts when maintenance margin usage reaches 100%. Omni liquidates partially: it closes just enough of the position to bring the account back to about 50% maintenance margin, rather than wiping the whole position at once. The closed part fills at the quote plus the 0.5% penalty.

Points and the $VAR token

The Omni points program started on 17 December 2025. Points are handed out every Friday at 00:00 UTC for the previous week's activity, and weekly distributions end no later than the end of Q4 2026. Accounts that traded before the launch get a 10% boost to points earned, and higher reward tiers add between 0.5% and 5%.

Variational says $VAR will launch in Q4 2026. According to its docs, 32% of the supply is a genesis distribution airdropped in proportion to points and fully unlocked at launch. 18% goes to an ecosystem reserve, and 50% to team and investors, locked for 12 months and unlocking over at least three years. The team also says it intends to use all treasury revenue to buy back and burn $VAR.

None of this guarantees what points will be worth. Variational keeps the right to change the program or remove points for "inorganic" activity, so trading only to farm points carries real cost through spreads and funding.

Referral program

Omni's referral program pays 5% of the spread your referrals pay, in USDC, plus 1 point for every 10 points they earn. You only get your first referral code after $1M in trading volume, and one more slot for each additional $1M. Variational also has a separate application form for people who want to become an affiliate.

DEX Review does not have an Omni referral link yet. If we add one, it will be marked clearly as a referral link.

How to start trading on Omni

  1. Get USDC on Arbitrum. Bridge first if your funds are on another chain.
  2. Open omni.variational.io and connect an EVM wallet.
  3. Enter an access code. Omni is in private beta and posts codes in its Discord and on X.
  4. Accept the Terms of Use, wait for the portfolio to be created, then sign the gasless login message.
  5. Deposit USDC. The 0.1 USDC fee comes out of the amount, and funds arrive within seconds.
  6. Pick a market, set leverage and margin mode, check the spread for your size, then buy or sell.

Withdrawals only go back to the wallet connected to your account.

Risks to understand first

  • One counterparty. OLP is on the other side of every trade, and the docs say plainly that OLP can lose money. Trader funds sit in a segregated on-chain settlement pool and are never sent to other exchanges. But if OLP became insolvent, profit accrued from that point on would be treated as bad debt and could not be paid out.
  • Spread over fees. Without a public order book, the price you get depends on OLP's quote. Compare the shown spread with another venue before large trades.
  • Restricted users. The service excludes US and Canadian persons, Taiwan, several US territories and sanctioned regions such as Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and parts of Ukraine. Using it from those places breaks the terms.
  • Young platform. Omni is still invite-only and the token has not launched. The protocol was audited by Zellic (December 2024) and Spearbit (March 2025), which lowers but does not remove smart contract risk.

FAQ

Is Variational Omni legit?

Omni is built on the Variational Protocol, which was audited by Zellic in December 2024 and Spearbit in March 2025. Trader funds are held in on-chain settlement pools. It is still a young, invite-only platform with a single market maker on the other side of every trade, so treat it as higher risk than long-established venues.

Does Variational Omni charge trading fees?

No. Omni charges no maker or taker fees. You pay through the spread in each quote, a flat 0.1 USDC per deposit or withdrawal, funding on open positions and a 0.5% penalty if a position is liquidated.

Does Variational have a token?

Not yet. Variational says its $VAR token will launch in Q4 2026, with 32% of supply airdropped to points holders at launch.

How do I get a Variational Omni access code?

Omni is in private beta. The official docs say access codes are shared in the Variational Discord and on its X (Twitter) account.

Is Variational Omni available in the US?

No. US persons, Canadian persons, Taiwan and several US territories are on the restricted list, along with sanctioned regions.

What is the maximum leverage on Omni?

Up to 50x. Leverage equals 1 divided by the initial margin, and the maintenance margin is usually half the initial margin.
